7 Things the Lord Hates - Lying Tongues & Killing Hands

Aug 16, 2026    Allen Pontarelli

What does it mean to truly live in alignment with God's character? This sermon digs into two of the seven things God detests as listed in Proverbs 6: a lying tongue and hands that shed innocent blood. Far from being abstract moral warnings, these two sins hit closer to home than most of us would like to admit. We explore the three core reasons we lie -- self-protection, fear of rejection, and the need for self-elevation -- and discover that each one reveals a deeper unwillingness to trust God with the truth of our lives. Drawing on the words of Jesus in John 8:44, we are reminded that deception is not a neutral habit but a spiritual alignment with the character of Satan himself. The antidote is not simply trying harder to be honest. It is surrendering to Jesus, who declares himself to be the way, the truth, and the life in John 14:6, putting on the belt of truth from Ephesians 6, and allowing confession and community to bring what is hidden in darkness into the healing light.
