Joel 2 - Return Before It's Too Late

We find ourselves at a critical crossroads where the ancient prophecy of Joel speaks directly into our modern moment. The book of Joel presents us with three urgent truths: the alarm is sounding, we must return to God, and there is assurance of restoration. Like a driver who momentarily falls asleep at the wheel and suddenly jerks awake with heightened senses, God is using the crises of our time to wake us from spiritual slumber. The judgment of God is upon us—not yet fully, but unmistakably present. We see it in Romans 1, where God gives people over to their heart's desires when they reject Him, in the groaning of creation through natural disasters, and in unprecedented persecution of believers worldwide. Yet in the midst of judgment, God still extends His hand of salvation. Joel's call to 'tear your hearts instead of your garments' invites us into something deeper than repentance—it calls us to lament. This ancient spiritual practice involves sitting in our sorrow, complaining honestly to God, petitioning Him for deliverance, and ultimately declaring our trust in Him. The beautiful truth is that biblical lament is always bookended by praise. We declare who God is before we bring our complaints, and we praise Him again as we trust He will act. The question before us is simple yet profound: Are we listening to the alarm? Will we return to the Lord before it's too late?
