Favorite Verse: Micah 6:8, my life verse. As Christians we should be concerned with justice issues, demonstrate kindness, mercy and humility as we walk with our God.
Personal Motto: Be a builder – with God’s help be a builder of people, families, neighborhoods, community and church. Ephesians 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Influences: Gerald Ford, a man of integrity and courage who helped me get started in my political career. Paul Henry, first as a professor at Calvin College, then as a friend and colleague. As a Congressman, Paul was a mentor and friend who lived out his faith at home, in Washington D.C. and in the face of death.
Epic Moments: God has given me a very interesting life to date. Three epic moments that stand out to me are: hunting accident at age 18, lost my right leg, God took a terrible episode and changed my life for the good; elected Mayor of Kentwood at age 31; and following God’s call into ministry, which was a big surprise!
